TDS and hardness aren't the same thing — but for hair, they travel together.
- TDS measures everything dissolved in water — calcium, magnesium, salts, bicarbonates, sulphates — as one combined mg/L number.
- Hardness is narrower: just the calcium and magnesium, the two minerals that actually bond to hair and scalp.
- In most Indian groundwater, calcium and magnesium make up the largest share of what's dissolved — so high TDS is almost always a hardness problem too.
- Above roughly 150–300 mg/L, enough mineral is present to bind with shampoo and resist rinsing off in a normal wash.
- Above 600 mg/L, that layer builds up wash after wash — dullness, frizz, tangling, slower colour fade.
- A chelating agent (Disodium EDTA, what INICIAL is built on) binds those minerals so they rinse away instead of settling on hair.
